Restylane® and Perlane®:
Redefining Beauty

What do Restylane® and Perlane® treat?

By now you may be aware that the dermal fillers Restylane® and Perlane® are FDA approved for the treatment of static facial wrinkles. Static means that when you look in the mirror and make no facial expression, those wrinkles or folds that you see are the lines treated with dermal fillers. If you smile or frown and see new wrinkles or folds those are called Dynamic lines which are treated with Botox® Cosmetic. The one exception to this rule would be “smoker's lines” around the lips. “Smoker's lines” are treated with Restylane® either into the lip edge and or just outside the lip edge directly beneath the lines. Restylane® is the world's most used, most studied cosmetic dermal filler and has been used in over 70 countries and in more than 1.4 million treatments in the U.S.

What is a dermal filler?

Dermal fillers such as Restylane® and Perlane® are injected into the dermal layer of the skin. They replace the volume lost over the years to restore a more youthful contour to the skin by smoothing away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

Restylane® and Perlane® are basically a sugar which is naturally found in our body. This sugar is hyaluronic acid. This sugar has a natural tendency to attract and bind many times it's own weight in water and maintains its volume for about six months. Restylane® and Perlane® do not contain any animal protein. Therefore no skin is needed to test for allergies.

Do I need Restylane® or Perlane®?

Restylane® does not contain any gel particles. This means that Restylane® has a fairly thin consistency. Therefore it is used to enhance the lips, treat finer facial lines class I or II and is used in conjunction with Perlane® to give additive effects. In addition to attracting and binding water hyaluronic acid is know to stimulate intense collagen formation by your skin.

Perlane® contains gel particles of varied sizes which makes it more viscous. For this reason Perlane® is injected deeper into the dermis and is used to treat heavy skin folds such as the smile lines or nasolabial folds, deep frown (glabellar) lines as well as “marionette lines.”

How much Restylane® or Perlane® will I need?

The before and after pictures will give you a starting point in figuring out how much you will need. The pictures show you how much product was used to correct the defects. The actual amount you will need may vary slightly but you will have a better idea of what to expect for results as well as cost after consulting with Dr. Basile.

Are the injections painful?

An ice pack is placed on the skin before, during and after the procedure to help with the discomfort. The discomfort will last about one hour depending on how much filler you require as well as your pain threshold. A local anesthesia—“dental block”—can be requested at an additional cost to minimize the pain.

What will I look like after the treatment?

Restylane® and Perlane® must be over-treated because they contain a small amount of buffered saline which is adsorbed with 24 hours. That means more is injected than you may want. The ultimate goal is to get rid of the wrinkles or folds and have a natural appearance without looking like you had “work done.”
